SVE Smart Meter Project
Advanced Metering Infrastructure
Sioux Valley Energy is replacing existing electric meters with Advanced
Metering Infrastructure (AMI), also known as a 'smart' meters. The new technology will provide two-way communication between YOU and the cooperative, putting the power of controlling energy use in YOUR hands.
The 'smart' meter looks much like your old meter except the dial is digital. Your old meter was only able to report total usage each 27-hour period. The new meter will record a snap-shot of electrical use every 30 minutes. That information will then be transferred to Sioux Valley Energy and will be available for members to access and view the next day via the Internet or through other methods.
What will and won't the Smart Meters do?
They WILL:
- Provide bi-hourly electric usage reports Members will be able to better track their electric usage and identify patterns. An online program will allow members to log on to a secure site to view that information.
- Provide outage information Sioux Valley Energy power lines will be used to transmit information regarding electric outages, blinking, etc. that affects our utility service to you. SVE will know about an outage before you even call in.
- Result in faster power restoration - we will be able to pinpoint trouble and identify areas affected during outages which will enable us to respond more quickly. The new electric meters even allow us to send a signal from the office and the meters will send a report back letting us know if all services have been restored.
- Provide voltage information the new metering system will allow our engineers to receive instant voltage information from your home or business. Also, we can balance electric load on the distribution lines which helps our system operate more efficiently and safely.
They WON'T:
- Infringe upon privacy Sioux Valley Energy is required to comply with all federal laws regarding the privacy, protection, and disclosure of personal information. The meters and associated communications system are equipped with security features to prevent unauthorized access.
- Automatically control electric use. It will be up to the member to monitor and adjust their electric usage to off-peak periods. The cooperative will not control use with the exception of members who have chosen to participate in the load management program for water heaters and air conditioners.
- "Communicate" with appliances The smart meters will not be able to "communicate" or send signals to appliances to regulate electric use. This technology is futuristic, but is currently being developed. In the future, we hope that members will be able to purchase "smart" appliances which will work in tandem with the smart meters.

The green dots on the Sioux Valley Energy service territory map indicate where meters have been replaced. The red dots are meters that still need to be changed out. Highlighted in yellow are the areas where meters are scheduled to be replaced within the next two months.
